“Hey Andrea, what are you going to do after Nauta?”

“I have a great startup idea that I would like to pursue. Let’s have a coffee and I can tell you all about it.”

And that is how we learnt about Andrea’s ground-breaking entrepreneurial adventure, Emjoy; one she was excited enough about to leave a promising career as a venture capitalist. In summary, Emjoy is a wellness app that empowers women on their journey to sexual happiness.

A few months later, when Andrea Oliver and her technical co-founder Dan Tamas came to the Nauta office in Barcelona to 'officially' present their idea, we were roused by the importance of the mission that they wanted to devote themselves to: enhance sexual wellbeing and thus happiness.

Sexual wellbeing has a huge impact on people’s health and happiness; however, there is little awareness about the poor levels of sexual wellbeing around the world. About 50% of the people worldwide say that they are not satisfied with their sex life, which amounts to more than 1 billion people aged over 18 in English and Spanish speaking regions. Only 1 out of 5 people suffering these issues seek professional help and those who do wait on average 4 years before taking that step. This is a disturbing and unaddressed reality.

Andrea showed us that the existing solutions were either ineffective, unaffordable, not anonymous or not trustworthy. The internet, for example, is full of useless, unreliable and inappropriate information on the matter. On the other hand, therapy by authorized, licensed experts is backed by research but expensive and sometimes intimidating.

Andrea’s brilliant idea was to apply the techniques used by meditation apps (which we knew well as both users and interested investors) to educate, motivate and empower women and, hopefully, enhance their sexual wellbeing. Emjoy is positive, personalized fun for inspiration on the aspirational pursuit of sexual happiness. And it is also a small contribution to the world achieving several UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Emjoy’s app (now available in the US, the UK and Spain on both the App Store and Google Play) offers proprietary content via audio sessions, including practical guides, meditation sessions, and daily habit builders. They are designed to help improve self-esteem and self-knowledge, desire, satisfaction, mental stimulation and communication. All the content is curated by experts and backed by scientific research, and the app lets you know whether it is safe for work or for intimate listening.

The topic of sexual wellness has been taboo until very recently, but step by step the importance of sexual happiness is being recognized in a more open manner. The VC world knows about this trend but has so far been reluctant to back innovation and opportunities in this sector.

We at Nauta have seen first-hand Andrea’s passion and talent and she knows what it takes to build a scalable, global business. That, combined with Dan’s technical expertise, was why we were delighted to support Emjoy early in their journey to become the category leader in the growing FemTech industry, like the 'Calm for sexual happiness'.
